I'm going to be auditioning in a band fair in a couple weeks. Basically means that I go up on stage, play a song with a backing track, and bands decide if they want me or not. I play bass, been playing seriously for two years now, and I'm pretty decent.
Unfortunately, the song I was going to play (Death Rides a Horse by Russian Circles) wasn't allowed due to being too long, and I need a new one. We're not allowed to edit the songs down for some strange reason, so I'm at a bit of a loss. I want to do a challanging song that's not amazingly difficult that'll earn me respect. My first inclination was to go with a Rage song, but I'm pretty much expecting at least four other people to end up playing Killing in the Name or Take the Power Back. I'd perfer a song that's not focused on alternative picking such as slap or tapping, as I'm still working on perfecting my form in those areas, but I'm pretty good with the old two fingers (ladies love it). Anyway, I was posting to ask for suggestions on the song. I've got a couple ideas, mainly rickrolling everyone, but I can't quite figure out something really satasfactory. Zeppelin might work, but I'm really trying to choose a song to represent my taste in music (if only I could pull of Cygnus... Visimund). I'd like a prog or post rock song that's difficult to play, or really anything that the hipsters listen to nowadays. Thanks guys! Edit: Couple requirements that I left off: song needs to be under 5 mins and free of profanity (laaaaaaame).

Hmmm
I'm not very familiar with songs with a lot of bass An obvious one is "hysteria" by Muse but you could try "New World Man" by Rush That's all i can think of at the moment, but I'll come back to this tomorrow when my brain is functioning properly Edit// You may find this interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5aK35vaMHY -------------------- Previous user names: Masterstick !Tom AsianNinja

I would also have suggested muse as a similar sound and technical level as russian circles. Though what song i dunno, im not up on my bass lines. Theres a lot of good stuff out there, Red Hot Chilli Peppers are always good for a bass line though they may have a bit too much slapping.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys! Hysteria is a good one if it wasn't so repetative; I actually thought about that one. If only it was a couple years ago and everyone and thier mom didn't listen to them, I could get some cred for knowing their shit. I might try Bliss of Fillip. Maybe some Radiohead tune. Rush would be cool to do, too. I'll think about that.
